Sheet Vinyl Flooring Installation
Sheet vinyl does not get as much attention as LVP or hardwood, but it deserves more credit than it gets. It is fully waterproof, easy to clean, and comfortable underfoot. The styles available today cover everything from basic utility spaces to updated kitchens and bathrooms. At Carpet Barn, we carry sheet vinyl in stock at our New Cumberland showroom and install it throughout Central PA. We have been doing it since 1974, and we know how to do it right.
Sheet vinyl is also one of the most budget-friendly flooring options available. For homeowners who want a clean, practical, waterproof floor without spending top dollar, it is hard to beat. And with today’s printing technology, the tile-look and wood-grain styles available look significantly better than sheet vinyl did a decade ago.
Our Sheet Vinyl Flooring Installation Process
Here is what the process looks like from your first call to the finished floor:
Step 1: Free Estimate
We start with a free, no-obligation estimate. Stop by our New Cumberland showroom to see sheet vinyl samples in person, or we can come measure your space at home. We look at the subfloor, discuss the room, and give you a written quote before we schedule anything.
Step 2: Subfloor Preparation
Before the new floor goes down, we prep the subfloor. We fill low spots, address fastener heads, and make sure the surface is clean, flat, and dry. This step is what determines whether the finished floor looks good and stays looking good.
Step 3: Cutting and Fitting
Sheet vinyl requires careful templating and cutting, especially in bathrooms and kitchens with cabinets, toilets, and tight corners. We take our time with this step. A poorly cut sheet vinyl install is immediately obvious and hard to fix after the adhesive goes down.
Step 4: Installation
We lay the sheet using the appropriate adhesive method for the product and the room. Edges and seams get proper attention to ensure they bond correctly and lay flat. We install all trim and transitions, including vinyl base, quarter round, and metal transitions, all of which we keep in stock.
Step 5: Final Walkthrough
Once the installation is complete, we walk through the space with you to confirm everything looks right. The floor should lay flat with no bubbles, lifted edges, or visible subfloor imperfections. Every Carpet Barn installation comes with a 1-year workmanship warranty.
What Is Sheet Vinyl Flooring?
Sheet vinyl is a continuous roll of vinyl flooring material, typically sold in 12-foot wide rolls. Unlike LVP or tile, it installs in one or two large pieces rather than individual planks or squares. That means fewer seams, which means fewer places for water to get underneath the floor.
You may have heard it called linoleum in the past. Technically, linoleum and vinyl are different materials, but people have used the terms interchangeably for decades. True linoleum is made from natural materials like linseed oil and is less common today. What most people mean when they say linoleum is sheet vinyl, which is what we carry and install.
Sheet Vinyl vs. LVP: What Is the Difference?
Both are vinyl products. Both are waterproof. The main differences come down to format and installation. Sheet vinyl installs as a single continuous piece using adhesive, while LVP (luxury vinyl plank) installs as individual planks using a click-lock floating method. LVP tends to look more like real hardwood. Sheet vinyl is better for smaller spaces, tight bathrooms, and situations where minimizing seams matters most.

Sheet Vinyl Styles We Carry and Install
We stock sheet vinyl in a range of styles at our New Cumberland showroom. Here is what you will find:
Tile-Look Sheet Vinyl
Printed to resemble ceramic or stone tile, complete with realistic grout line patterns. A popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms for anyone who wants the look of tile without the cost or installation complexity of real tile.
Wood-Grain Sheet Vinyl
Printed with a realistic wood plank appearance. Works well in rooms where you want the warmth of a wood look with the practicality and easy maintenance of vinyl.
No-Pattern Sheet Vinyl
Solid or minimally patterned sheet vinyl for utility spaces, laundry rooms, and areas where function matters more than aesthetics. Durable, easy to clean, and available in several neutral tones.
Scotchguard-Protected Sheet Vinyl
Select products include a Scotchguard surface treatment applied at the factory. Adds protection against stains, scuffs, and everyday wear. A good choice for high-traffic kitchens and family spaces.
Cushioned Sheet Vinyl
Products with a built-in foam or felt backing for added underfoot comfort. Makes a noticeable difference in kitchens and laundry rooms where you stand for long stretches. The Congoleum Airstep line is a strong example of this.
Commercial-Grade Sheet Vinyl
Thicker construction and a heavier wear layer for spaces with very high foot traffic. Available through special order for residential use cases where standard sheet vinyl may not hold up long-term.
Sheet Vinyl Installation Methods
There are two main ways to install sheet vinyl, and the right choice depends on the room size, the product, and the subfloor condition:
Full-Spread Glue-Down
Adhesive covers the entire subfloor surface before the sheet vinyl goes down. This creates a firm, stable bond with no flex or movement. It works best for larger rooms and open floor plans where the sheet needs to stay perfectly flat without buckling or shifting.
Perimeter Glue
Adhesive runs only around the edges and along any seams rather than across the full floor. The field of the sheet floats freely. This method works well in smaller spaces like bathrooms and laundry rooms where the walls keep the sheet contained. It is also a bit easier to remove down the road if the floor needs to be replaced.
Our installers assess the room and the product before recommending a method. Both approaches produce a good result when the right product meets the right installation technique and a properly prepared subfloor.

Subfloor Preparation for Sheet Vinyl
Sheet vinyl is less forgiving about subfloor imperfections than carpet, but more forgiving than tile. Any bump, screw head, or subfloor seam that does not get addressed before installation will eventually show through the vinyl on the surface. We address this before laying a single inch of material.
Here is what we check and handle as part of every sheet vinyl installation:
- Subfloor smoothing. We fill low spots and sand down high spots to create a flat surface. Any subfloor irregularity larger than 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span will show through the vinyl in time.
- Fastener heads. Exposed screw or nail heads get countersunk and filled before the new floor goes down.
- Existing floor assessment. Sheet vinyl can often go directly over a single layer of existing vinyl if that existing floor is flat, well-bonded, and in good condition. We assess this on a job-by-job basis.
- Moisture check. For installations over concrete, we check for moisture issues before committing to an adhesive install. Excessive moisture can affect the adhesive bond over time.
