Vinyl Flooring Installation

Vinyl flooring has come a long way. What used to mean a single sheet of plain, utilitarian material now covers a wide range of products. You will find everything from waterproof luxury vinyl tile to cushioned sheet vinyl with realistic wood and stone looks. At Carpet Barn, we carry and install the full range of vinyl flooring options and have been doing it throughout Central PA since 1974. If you are shopping for vinyl and feeling unsure about the options, we will help you sort it out.

Vinyl is one of the most practical flooring choices available. It handles moisture, holds up under heavy use, and works in rooms where other flooring types struggle. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, mudrooms. Vinyl works well in all of them. We stock multiple styles at our New Cumberland showroom and can special order from our full manufacturer catalog for anything not on the floor.

Our Vinyl Flooring Installation Process

We handle the full install from start to finish. Here is what working with Carpet Barn looks like:

Step 1: Free Estimate

We start with a free, no-obligation estimate. Stop by our New Cumberland showroom to see samples in person. We can also schedule a time to come measure your space at home. We assess the subfloor, discuss your product options, and give you a written quote before we confirm anything.

Step 2: Subfloor Preparation

A smooth, level subfloor is essential for a good vinyl installation. We check for high spots, low spots, and any damage that needs to be addressed before the new floor goes down. We handle floor patching and minor repairs as part of the install.

Step 3: Cutting and Fitting

Once you approve the quote, we confirm your product choice. In-stock products can usually move to scheduling right away. Special orders go through our manufacturer network, and we keep you updated on timing.

Step 4: Installation

Our team handles everything on install day. We move furniture and remove existing flooring when needed. We then install your new vinyl using the right method for the product and the space. All seams, edges, and transitions get finished properly. We install vinyl base, quarter round, shoe molding, and metal transitions, all of which we keep in stock.

Step 5: Final Walkthrough

When the job is done, we walk through the space with you to confirm everything looks right. We clean up before we leave and back every Carpet Barn installation with a 1-year workmanship warranty.

Types of Vinyl Flooring We Install

Customers often come in using the terms vinyl, linoleum, sheet vinyl flooring, and LVP interchangeably. They are not the same thing, and the right choice depends on your space, your budget, and what you need the floor to do. Here is a breakdown of the vinyl flooring types we carry and install:

Sheet Vinyl

Sold in large rolls and installed in one or two continuous pieces. A practical, budget-friendly choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. Available in tile-look, wood-grain, and no-pattern styles. In-stock at our showroom.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)

Individual tile-format vinyl planks that replicate the look of ceramic, stone, or porcelain. 100% waterproof with a realistic texture. Installs as a floating floor or glue-down depending on the product.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Plank-format vinyl that replicates hardwood. Waterproof, scratch-resistant, and available in a wide range of wood-grain looks. Our most popular vinyl product. See our dedicated LVP installation page for more details.

Waterproof Vinyl

A broad category covering any vinyl product with a waterproof core. Includes both LVP and LVT formats. Ideal for kitchens, baths, basements, and any space that sees moisture on a regular basis.

Vinyl with Scotchguard

Select sheet vinyl products include Scotchguard protection applied at the factory. Adds resistance to stains, scuffs, and surface wear. A good option for high-traffic areas or households with kids and pets.

Commercial-Grade Vinyl

Heavier wear layer, tighter construction, and greater durability for light commercial spaces or residential areas with very high foot traffic. Available through special order.

Vinyl Flooring Installation Methods

Not all vinyl installs the same way. The method depends on the product type, the condition of the subfloor, and the room it is going into. Our team knows which method works best for each situation:

Floating / Click-Lock

Used for LVP and LVT products with a click-lock edge profile. Planks or tiles lock together without adhesive and float over the subfloor. Can often go directly over existing tile or vinyl without full demo. Fast, clean install with no drying time.

Full-Spread Glue-Down

Used for sheet vinyl and some LVT products. Adhesive covers the entire subfloor surface before the vinyl goes down. Creates a firm, stable bond with no movement. Best for large open spaces and rooms where the floor needs to stay perfectly flat.

Perimeter Glue

A middle-ground method used for sheet vinyl in smaller spaces. Adhesive runs around the edges and seams rather than the full floor. Holds the sheet in place while allowing slight flexibility in the field. Common in bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Glue-Down LVT

Some LVT products call for a full adhesive install rather than floating. This is more common in commercial applications or rooms where subfloor irregularities make a floating install less stable.

Our installers assess the room and the product before recommending a method. Both approaches produce a good result when the right product meets the right installation technique and a properly prepared subfloor.

Where Vinyl Flooring Works Best

Vinyl is one of the most versatile flooring options on the market. These are the spaces where it performs best and where our customers use it most:

Kitchens

Vinyl handles spills, dropped items, and heavy foot traffic without complaint. Easy to clean, comfortable to stand on, and available in styles that look great alongside cabinets and countertops.

Bathrooms

100% waterproof vinyl holds up where tile grout fails. No concerns about moisture seeping through seams. Sheet vinyl in particular is an excellent bathroom flooring choice.

Basements

Basements are prone to moisture, and vinyl does not care. LVP and sheet vinyl both work well below grade, especially when paired with proper subfloor prep and moisture management.

Laundry Rooms

Moisture, detergent spills, and the occasional flooded washer are no match for vinyl. Easy to mop, easy to maintain, and far more forgiving than hardwood or laminate.

Mudrooms

High traffic, dirt, wet boots, and pets make mudrooms tough on flooring. Vinyl handles all of it. A commercial-grade wear layer gives you extra protection in this kind of space.

Rental Properties

Vinyl is a smart investment for landlords. It holds up to tenant traffic, cleans easily between occupants, and the cost per square foot is lower than most alternatives.
