Hardwood Flooring Installation
Hardwood flooring is one of the oldest and most trusted flooring choices in residential construction. It adds warmth, character, and real value to a home. At Carpet Barn, we have been helping Central PA homeowners select and install hardwood flooring since 1974. Our team knows the differences between hardwood products and what proper installation requires. We will get you a result that holds up and looks great for decades.
We carry solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, and prefinished options from manufacturers with strong track records for quality and consistency. Whether you are doing one room or an entire floor, we will help you pick the right product and install it correctly the first time.
Our Hardwood Installation Process
From first call to final walkthrough, here is how a hardwood installation works with Carpet Barn:
Step 1: Free Estimate
We start with a free, no-obligation estimate. Come into our showroom to see hardwood samples in person, or we can schedule a visit to measure your space at home. We assess the subfloor, talk through product options, and give you a written quote before we book anything.
Step 2: Acclimation
Once you approve the estimate and select your product, the hardwood needs time to acclimate in your home before installation begins. This is typically 3 to 5 days depending on the product and the conditions in your home. We will give you specific guidance for your product.
Step 3: Subfloor Preparation
On installation day, we start with the subfloor. We check levelness and moisture, patch any problem areas, and repair squeaks before the first board goes down. A properly prepped subfloor is the foundation of a long-lasting hardwood install.
Step 4: Installation
We lay the hardwood using the appropriate method for the product and subfloor. We work room by room, cutting precisely around doorways, transitions, and obstacles. We handle furniture moving and install all trim and transitions. Quarter round, shoe molding, and metal transitions are all in stock at our showroom.
Step 5: Final Walkthrough
When the installation is complete, we walk through the space with you to confirm everything looks right. Every Carpet Barn hardwood installation comes with a 1-year workmanship warranty. If anything is not right, we will come back and fix it.
Types of Hardwood Flooring We Install
Hardwood comes in several formats, and each one suits different rooms, subfloor conditions, and budgets. Here is a plain-language breakdown of what we carry and install:
Solid Hardwood
Solid hardwood comes from a single piece of wood, typically three-quarters of an inch thick. It is the classic choice for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms on above-grade or on-grade installations. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifetime. Many homeowners treat it as a long-term investment in the home.
One thing to keep in mind: solid hardwood is sensitive to moisture and humidity. It should not go below grade, which means it is not suitable for most basements. It also requires a wood or plywood subfloor for nail-down or staple-down installation.
Engineered Hardwood
Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer on top bonded to multiple layers of cross-ply plywood or HDF core below. This construction makes it more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood, meaning it handles humidity and temperature changes better. It can go below grade, on grade, or above grade, making it a more versatile option across the home.
Engineered hardwood can be installed as a floating floor, glued down, or nailed/stapled depending on the product and the subfloor. It can typically be sanded and refinished at least once, and some thicker products allow for multiple refinishes over time.
Prefinished Hardwood
Prefinished hardwood arrives from the factory with its stain and finish already applied. This means no drying time after installation, no odor from on-site finishing, and a more consistent finish across every board. Most of the hardwood we carry and install comes prefinished from the factory. It is a practical choice for occupied homes where you cannot afford days of downtime waiting for finish to cure.
Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood: Which Is Right for You?
This is one of the most common questions we get in the showroom. Here is a straightforward comparison to help you decide:
| Solid Hardwood | Engineered Hardwood | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Single solid wood plank | Real wood veneer over layered core |
| Thickness | 3/4 inch | 3/8 to 3/4 inch |
| Where It Can Go | Above grade and on grade only | Above, on, and below grade |
| Moisture Tolerance | Low. Keep away from wet and humid areas | Better handles humidity changes well |
| Install Methods | Nail-down or staple-down | Nail, staple, glue-down, or floating |
| Can It Be Refinished | Yes, multiple times | Yes, at least once (more for thicker products) |
| Best For | Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms | Basements, kitchens, whole-home installs |

Subfloor Preparation: Why It Matters for Hardwood
Hardwood is less forgiving than vinyl or carpet when it comes to subfloor conditions. A floor that is not flat, not dry, or not structurally sound will cause problems down the road. Gaps, cupping, squeaking, and finish failure are all common results of a poor install over a bad subfloor.
Our installers check the subfloor before laying a single board. We look at flatness, moisture levels, and structural integrity. If repairs or prep work come up, we handle them as part of the installation process. This includes:
- Floor patching for low or uneven spots
- Squeak repair before new flooring goes down
- Moisture testing for concrete subfloors before glue-down installs
- Acclimation guidance. Hardwood needs time to adjust to the temperature and humidity of your home before installation begins.
Acclimation is a step that some contractors skip and should not. Hardwood that goes down before it has adjusted to the home’s environment can expand, contract, or cup after installation. We will tell you how long to let the product acclimate before we schedule the install.
