Carpet Binding
Carpet binding is one of the most practical and affordable flooring services we offer. At Carpet Barn, we bind carpet locally at our New Cumberland showroom, . We turn carpet remnants, in-stock broadloom, or custom-ordered carpet into finished area rugs, hallway runners, and stair runners. We have offered carpet binding as part of our flooring services since 1974, and it remains one of the most requested services for customers who shop our remnant selection.
Without binding, a cut carpet piece will fray along the edges over time. With binding, those edges get a clean, durable, professional finish that holds up under regular foot traffic and repeated cleaning. Whether you buy a remnant, choose from our in-stock selection, or order a specific style, we bind it to the size and shape you need.
What Is Carpet Binding?
Carpet binding is a finishing process that applies a durable edging material along the perimeter of a cut carpet piece. The binding wraps around the raw edge, securing the carpet fibers and creating a clean, finished border that will not fray or unravel with use.
The binding itself is typically a flat, woven tape sewn tightly to the edge of the carpet using a commercial serging or binding machine. The result looks intentional and professional. The result looks like a finished area rug you would buy in a store, not a cut piece of carpet laid on the floor.
Carpet binding makes sense any time you have a carpet piece that needs to function as a standalone rug or runner rather than a wall-to-wall installation. It is the step that takes a piece of carpet and turns it into a finished product.
Three Ways to Get Carpet Bound at Carpet Barn
We work with three different starting points for carpet binding projects. Here is how each one works:
1. Bind a Carpet Remnant
We keep an in-stock selection of carpet remnants at our New Cumberland showroom. These are quality carpet pieces left over from larger rolls, available at reduced prices. Pick a remnant from our current stock, choose the size you need, and we will bind the edges on-site. This is the fastest and most budget-friendly option for most customers.
Remnant sizes and styles change as we work through stock, so come in and see what is available. If you have specific dimensions in mind, call ahead and we will let you know whether we have something that fits.
2. Bind In-Stock Carpet
Any carpet we carry in-stock can be cut to your specifications and bound to create a custom area rug or runner. This gives you access to our full in-stock selection, including specific fiber types, pile heights, colors, and constructions, not just what happens to be left over on a remnant piece. We cut the carpet to the size you need and bind it on-site.
3. Bind a Special Order Carpet
If our in-stock selection does not have what you want, we can special order from our full manufacturer catalog. Once the carpet arrives, we cut it to your specified dimensions and bind it locally. This option gives you access to hundreds of carpet styles, patterns, and constructions beyond what we keep on the showroom floor.
What We Can Make for You
Carpet binding works for a wide range of finished products. Here is what our customers use it for most often:
Custom Area Run
The most common use for carpet binding. Choose any size, any shape, and any carpet style from our selection. We cut to your dimensions and bind all four edges for a finished rug that fits your room perfectly.
Hallway Runners
A bound carpet runner is a practical, durable solution for high-traffic hallways. We can cut and bind a runner to the exact length and width of your hallway, in any carpet style we carry or can order.
Stair Runners
Stair runners add comfort underfoot, reduce noise, and protect stair treads from wear. We cut the runner to your stair length and bind both long edges cleanly. A popular use for both remnants and in-stock carpet.
Entry Mats
A bound carpet piece at a front or back entry handles heavy foot traffic, absorbs dirt and moisture, and stays in place better than a typical store-bought mat. We can size it to fit your exact entry space.
Pet Areas and Crate Mats
A bound carpet piece in a pet zone or under a crate gives your pet a comfortable surface while protecting the floor below. Easy to replace when it wears out, and far more durable than most commercial pet mats.
Basement and Office Pieces
For finished basements or home offices where a full carpet installation is not practical, a bound carpet piece covers the space you use without committing to a wall-to-wall install.
How the Carpet Binding Process Works
Here is what to expect when you bring a carpet binding project to Carpet Barn:
Step 1: Choose Your Carpet
Start by selecting your carpet. Browse our in-stock remnant selection, pick a style from our showroom broadloom, or tell us what you are looking for and we will help you find it, in-stock or through a special order. Bring your room measurements so we can confirm the right dimensions for your project.
Step 2: Cut to Size
Once we know your dimensions, we cut the carpet to the size and shape you need. We work with standard rectangular sizes as well as custom dimensions for rooms or staircases that need a specific fit.
Step 3: Binding
We bind the cut edges locally at our New Cumberland showroom. The binding tape wraps around each raw edge and gets sewn tight to create a clean, finished border on all sides. Turnaround time varies depending on project volume. Ask us about current lead times when you stop in.
Step 4: Pick Up or Coordinate Delivery
When the binding is complete, your finished rug or runner is ready to take home. If you also want the piece installed, our team can handle that as well. Just ask when you stop in.
